The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Bishop Croneberger and opened
with prayer.
AGENDA
Motion: It was moved and seconded to adopt the agenda as prepared. The motion
was adopted.
MINUTES
Motion: It was moved and seconded to accept the minutes for the meeting of December
18, 2002. The motion to accept the minutes as corrected was adopted.
EPISCOPAL COMMUNICATIONS - THE RT. REV. JOHN P. CRONEBERGER
Announcements included the following:
Welcomed the Very Rev. C. David Williams, dean of the cathedral.
Reported on several accidents involving clergy persons; the Rev. Briggett Keith
suffered from a fall recently, as did the Rev. Geoff Curtiss and the Rev. John
Donnelly. Ms. Mary Novello had emergency surgery last week. Bishop Elysee, a
former visiting bishop, was recovering from an illness. Requested prayers for
Bishop Richard Shimpfky who announced his retirement.
Announced that the Rev. Mildred Solomon would conclude her service at House of
Prayer and St. Barnabas' at the end of the month.
Reported on clergy deployment changes: The Rev. Gray Lesesne was called as rector
to All Saints', Glen Rock; The Rev. Martin Oguike accepted a call to the diocese
of New Jersey; The Rev. Charles Arlin was scheduled to be installed over the
weekend; The Rev. James Petroccine resigned as associate in Ramsey; The Rev.
John Sargunum was ministering to Holy Trinity, West Orange; and, The Rev. Ernest
Kataweirhe was interim at St. Mark's, West Orange.
Reported that interviews for the position of Justice Missioner were being conducted
by Canon R. Carter Echols.
Candidates for diocesan elected offices will be certified for anti-racism training.
District leadership positions require the training, as well.
Sandy Wilson and Robert Morris will be the keynoters at the March 29 mini-Celebrating
Creative Congregations. The Rev. Eric Laws will be the keynoter at the fall clergy
conference.
COMPANION DIOCESE RELATIONSHIP
Bishop Croneberger appointed the committee to research and recommend a diocese
for the companion relationship and asked for Council ratification. The members
were: the Rev. Esar Budhu, St. Agnes/St. Paul's, East Orange; Ms. Kitty Ferguson,
St. Peter's, Morristown; Ms. Martha Gardner, St. George's, Maplewood; Mr. Rubin
Gerado, St. John the Divine, Hasbrouck Heights, Ms. Bernice Mayes, Trinity +
St. Philip's Cathedral, Newark; The Rev. William Parnell, Christ, Hackensack;
The Rev. Robert Schiesler, St. Luke's, Montclair; the Rev. Margaret Swetman,
Grace, Union City; and, Mr. Don Roberts, The Saviour, Secaucus.
Motion: It was moved, seconded and adopted to ratify the appointments.
TREASURER'S REPORT
[The Treasurer's Report was distributed at the meeting.]
In the absence of Mr. John Zinn, Mr. Francaviglia reported that the accrual for
2002 totaled $280,000, an amount that should be received in 2003. It was noted
that the accrual was significantly higher than previous years. The extent to
which those receivables were collected would determine the final 2002 financial
results.
Motion: It was moved and seconded to accept the report, subject to audit. The
motion was adopted.
THE ROLE OF COUNCIL
The Rev. Jack Stanton reviewed the process and work of the Role of the Council
committee and the council members, beginning with the March meeting and the report
of the ad hoc committee.

The exercise for the evening was to plan the orientation session scheduled for
the February 12 meeting. Members discussed "norms and expectations" that
could be used for a position description of membership.
The Role of the Council committee will meet on Tuesday, January 28 at 3:30 p.m.
at Episcopal House.
DEPARTMENT OF MISSIONS REPORT
The Rev. Canon Paul Hunt updated the status of the DOM. This past fall the DOM
members worked on a project that had liaisons writing narratives describing the
various mission congregations, their history and their plans for the future;
property issue reports and budgets will be published; and, a packet of information
on the DOM congregations will be prepared for council. The executive committee
of DOM will begin to work with the Council Missions' Committee after the February
meeting. The finalized copies of the booklets will be ready by March. The executive
committee will hand to Council some of the work on criteria for congregational
status (currently the levels of status were mission, incorporated mission, aided
parish and parish). The canonical changes will be handled by the Committee on
Constitution and Canons for adoption at Convention 2004. The transition was expected
to take a year to complete.
DIOCESAN CONVENTION REPORT
Canon R. Carter Echols and Mr. Michael Francaviglia reported on some
of the plans for the convention that had the theme, "Celebration
and Engagement: Life in Our Multi-Ethnic World."
EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN
Mrs. Doris Mardirosian reported that on programming plans by the ECW, which included
a Pilgrim's Party on March 2. The annual Honoring Women luncheon will be on April
5 at Church of the Saviour, Denville with Lyn Headley-Moore as the keynoter.
The Bishop thanked those members of Council who had concluded their terms for
their service: Mrs. Kathleen Ballard, Mr. Jack Reade, The Rev. Briggett Keith
and The Rev. Steven Steele.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m. with prayer by the Rev. Steve Steele.
