members would join the Council in February. This council had been on a fruitful
journey that discussed the life of the council and made the choice not to continue
with the status quo, but to change and live into the role and responsibilities
as defined under the canons. A transformation had occurred and he was grateful
for their work.
COUNCIL STRUCTURE
The members worked on drafting job descriptions, charges and expectation for
each of the new Council committees. It was envisioned that continuing members
would select the committee on which they wanted to serve and so could help develop
the shared vision when the new committee formed in February with the new members
of Council. The exercise was introduced by The Rev. Bevan Stanley.
The questions that guided the exercise were: What are the most important tasks
for this committee in its first year? With which individuals and groups should
this committee be in touch? What else would help Council 2004 implement this
committee?
The committees were:
• Congregational Vitality
• Inclusion (Diversity)
• Discipleship
• Apostolate
The responses from the discussion groups were as follows:
Congregational Vitality (participants: Randall Day, Sidney King, Bevan Stanley,
Andrew Piccirillo, Kim Capwell, Bob Schiesler, Steve Boston, Naomi Horsky)
What are the most important tasks for this committee in its first year?
• Include folks not on Council
• Clarify what we mean by congregational vitality; measurable statistics

Inclusion (participants Paul Walker, Margaret Swetman, Doris Mardirosian, Abigail
Hamilton, Donald Roberts)
What are the most important tasks for this committee in its first year?

the diocese

move meetings around diocese to really see and experience our diversity)

With which individuals and groups should this committee be in touch?
• Any and everyone who can make the above happen
Discipleship (participants: Don Cairns, Prince Singh, Glenda deKruif)

times annually and have a liaison

What are the most important tasks for this committee in its first year?
• Getting an inventory of what is going on
• Resend notes on minutes of congregational organizations
• Identify what are the current ministries in the Diocese
• What is the scope of the oversight; does it extend to the province, especially
with other dioceses in regional proximity?
With which individuals and groups should this committee be in touch?
• The CDC; have CDC event; the Jubilee Centers
• The Council Committee on Committees report for identification of the various
committees (John Garde, Province II, convention, prison ministry, Jubilee Centers,
Oasis, immigrant ministries, ECW, Martha Gardner)
What else would help Council 2004 implement this committee?
• Begin the set up of some networks and look for liaisons or contact people (see
report of the Council Committee on Committees)
• Some form of diocesan-wide meeting to share in these clarity of purpose
• Why information gathered? What has been done?

at a time when the financial situation of the diocese was unsteady and he worked
to help stabilize and strengthen the finances. Later Denny served on the Department
