Call #2
Easter 2008
The Church of the Holy Communion, Paterson
A New Roof
In this time of global financial uncertainty after years of expansion, many institutions, businesses, and individuals alike are revising their spending patterns and carefully managing their assets to be sure there is enough for essential needs. These are not new practices for the members of Holy Communion, Paterson.
Holy Communion has had a unique history of trouble and triumph over the 152 years of its existence. The congregation, while never large, has ever been determined to overcome adversity such as a 38 year exile from its pictureesque church after foreclosure until they bought the property back, and the near collapse of the church into a railway cut adjacent to the building before rescue by construction workers. The congregation learned many decades ago, that financial calamity could come at any moment and so carefully husbands their resources. They pay their bills and are in the black -- barely.
Perhaps it is their passion to be Ministers of the Gospel that carries them through dark times. Worship has always been centered in the Eucharist. They are in and of their neighborhood, sponsoring after school programs and beginning a new computer literacy programs for Seniors during the day and kids after school. New work stations are being constructed for the six computers waiting in their boxes.
Diversity is too light a word to describe this faithful band. Physical or mental disability, color of skin, age, gender -- none of these markers keeps anyone outside the circle of belonging. Any visitor can see the love and respect they have for one another and feel welcomed. The quality of their life together is to be envied.
The church needs a new roof. Now is the time to replace it as interior water damage is slight, but it won't stay that way. The congregation has 40% of the $50,000 needed. This call will cover another 20% making a 40% loan possible. It is our privilege to give them a helping hand.
In Peace
The Rt. Rev. Mark M. Beckwith
Bishop of Newark
