+ CLERGY CONFERENCE REGISTRATION is now available by following this link: http://www.dioceseofnewark.org/09clergyconfregis.html.  Please note the Sept. 18 registration deadline. As before, all attendees must submit the Registration Form online (be sure to use this link and include your "best" email address on the form).  Overnight attendees will call the Shawnee and make their reservations.  Commuters will send checks to 31 Mulberry.  Contact:  Kay Lark, klark@dioceseofnewark.org, 973-430-9976.

+ Great Christian Education Resource - The Episcopal Church has produced Lesson Plans for Small Congregations.  These resources are available for Young Children, Older Children, and Adults.  You can find them at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/lessonplans.  Take a look!

+ IRS BUSINESS MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT RATE for 2009 is fifty-five cents per mile.  This is a slight decrease in the 2008 rate and reflects the change in fuel costs.

+ PLANNED GIVING SEMINARS - Facilitated by Jim Murphy of the Episcopal Church Foundation, these seminars are open to all clergy and lay leaders who are interested in taking the mystery out of planned giving for their congregation.  Learn how planned giving differs from annual stewardship and capital campaigns, and how your parish can build endowment funds.  Please RSVP to Jim directly by e-mail at jmurphy@episcopalfoundation.org or by phone at 800-697-2858 -- the response deadline is one week before the session you plan to attend.

+ QUICK REMINDER TO CLERGY - if a congregation hires an assistant or associate priest, that person should contact Patty Leonard at pleonard@dioceseofnewark.org or 973-430-9906 in order to get their information into the system, discuss License to Officiate (if resident in another diocese), transfer of training certificates, etc.

+ CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION PROGRAM OPENINGS are available at the Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities in New Brunswick beginning September 16 and ending in mid-May.  If interested, contact Mr. Bill Gaventa, program director, 732-235-9304 or bill.gaventa@umdnj.edu. + A VOICE ANNOUNCEMENT - MAILING LIST UPDATES for the Voice will begin this month.  Congregational mailing lists will be sent from Redmond Press by email and regular mail to all churches for additions and deletions of parishioner names and addresses.  We want all members of our diocese to receive the Voice regularly and without delay.  Returned papers because of faulty addresses are costly for the diocese.  Your assistance is important to update your church mailing list as accurately as possible.  Instructions on completing the forms will be provided and a return date will be requested.

+ LICENSES TO OFFICIATE in the Diocese of Newark.  If you are not canonically resident in the Diocese of Newark, you MUST have a current license to officiate.  Please download the Application to Renew at http://www.dioceseofnewark.org/lto_renewal_app.doc, complete it an send it in TODAY.

+ 10/25/09 – “Becoming Disciples – How will we create a culture of call?”  World-renowned Biblical scholar Walter Brueggmann will give the keynote address which will begin the discussion and planning of a Day of Discernment in the Spring.  Dinner and table discussion will identify key areas of how we might begin and continue to live into our Covenant to be life-giving, vibrant faith communities. + MAKING CHURCH A SAFE PLACE FOR ALL GOD'S CHILDREN, a manual of policies for the protection of children and youth from abuse, was adopted by the Diocesan Council in May 2008. Congregations are encouraged to use and adopt similar policies. The manual is available in PDF format in Download Central of the website - www.dioceseofnewark.org/download_central.html.

+ WEEKLY NEWS DIGEST - We publish diocesan event and meeting information in the Weekly Digest every Thursday (with the exception of holidays).  While the Digest will publish any relevant information regarding district events and meetings, prior notification emailed to the Newark List will preclude a mention in the Digest unless special circumstances warrant.

To suggest information that might be included in the Digest, please send a brief (no more than 100 words and in plain-text, if possible) e-mail to digest@dioceseofnewark.org. Be sure to include contact information for your meeting or event. PLEASE DO NOT SEND FLYERS!! (NOTE:  we do not publish information about parish-related events.) The deadline for receipt of information to be included in the Weekly Digest is 5:00pm on the Monday prior to publication; thus, the deadline for the next Weekly Digest is Monday, September 7, 2009.
