Beyond the Baptismal Covenant:
Effective Lay Leadership for the 21st Century

Presented by Donald Romanik, President, Episcopal Church Foundation

March 4, 11, & 18, 2010
6 pm – 9 pm

At Grace Church
4 Madison Avenue
Madison, NJ
(http://gracemadison.org/directions.html)

Donald Romanik, president of the Episcopal Church Foundation will lead three interconnected workshops designed to help strengthen lay leadership in congregations.

These exercises might be called “CREDO for Congregations.” There is a baptismal call to lay leadership. We will examine three different but equally important categories of lay leadership.

  • Transactional
  • Functional
  • Transformational

Discover where you fit and how you can help to identify and encourage the ministry of others.

Workshop Schedule & Details

Each session will be 6 – 9 pm, and will begin with dinner.

The cost is $25 for all three sessions, or $10 per individual session. While we encourage participants to attend all three sessions, each will be a stand alone topic and presentation.

The brochure with registration form is available at http://cfc.dioceseofnewark.org/dromanik2010.pdf. The deadline to register is Friday, February 26.

Thursday, March 4: Leadership Now
This session will explore a brief history of lay leadership in the Episcopal Church, the concept of ministry of all the baptized and the compelling need for effective lay leadership in this time and place. Participants will explore various models of leadership in the secular world and apply them to the Christian context as we begin to articulate a working definition of an effective leader.

Thursday, March 11: Lay Leaders are Called Not Made
Moving from a working definition of an effective lay leader, this session will examine what leaders do and how leaders lead with the underlying premise that one is called to lay leadership through an appropriate and thoughtful discernment process. We will distinguish leaders from managers and volunteers as well as discuss the differences between functional/transactional leaders and transformational leaders.

Thursday, March 18: Leadership for What?
This session will explore the changing role of lay leaders in a changing church, the obstacles to effective leadership in the Church, the discernment of gifts and where we go from here. We will especially focus on the role of clergy in identifying, recruiting, empowering and training effective transformational lay leaders in the Church of the future.
