This Lent, the congregation of Christ Church in Bloomfield/Glen Ridge stepped out in audacious faith by removing 19 pews to transform the entrance of their church into a self-guided, interactive Stations of the Cross.

Youth Comes Knocking - Teen General Convention Deputies Caroline Christie and Gibson Oakley
Caroline Christie, age 17 and Gibson Oakley, age 16, came to Diocesan Convention and stood for election as lay deputies to General Convention in 2012, alongside seven other candidates who were often decades their elders. Grounded in their belief that they had both been called to serve the Diocese of Newark, the young people carried the day. The story of their election is a story of their faith and determination, and of a conscious effort by the Diocese of Newark to more fully involve young people in every part of the life of our church.

Meet the Interns of NEWARK ACTS
They're coming from Atlanta and Boston, Alaska and Texas, Wisconsin, Iowa, and New York State. One speaks both Mandarin and Arabic; another is a musician; yet another is discerning a possible call to ordained ministry. One has done mission work in Chile, another in South Africa. Starting August 23, they will spend the next 11 months working for social change and personal transformation as interns in NEWARK ACTS, the Young Adult Urban Internship Program of the Diocese of Newark.

Reported Haiti Donations Reach $140K
The total reported amount given to Haiti relief by the Diocese and its congregations and members is $140,138.15 as of April 20, 2010. This is comprised of $126,223.15 raised by 40 congregations; $3915.00 donated by 13 individuals; and $10,000 allocated by the Diocese of Newark's Diocesan Council at its meeting on January 13.

New Jersey: Our Common State for Ministry
In 1874, the third bishop of the state of New Jersey, William Henry Odenheimer, divided the state into two dioceses along the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. The current bishops of the two dioceses, the Rt. Rev. Mark Beckwith of Newark, and the Rt. Rev. George Councell of New Jersey, friends of long standing, together led a diocesan convention workshop, “New Jersey: Our Common State for Ministry” on Jan. 29. As Beckwith commented, “there are tremendous opportunities to build bridges between Episcopalians around the state.”

Slavery in the 21st Century
Young girls sold as child brides, kidnapped for prostitution, or held as indentured servants. Adolescent males kidnapped for their organs, to work in mines, or as prostitutes. These were some of the stories of women and children victimized by modern human trafficking worldwide told by the Rev. Dr. Maylin Biggadike, featured speaker at the annual Women’s Commission breakfast held Jan. 30 at Diocesan Convention.
