District 2 Meeting February 21, 2008 St. Andrew’s Lincoln Park, NJ

I. Reports a. Convener’s Report: i. Naomi Horsky welcomed Kai Alston, Youth Missioner, Diocese of Newark. b. Diocesan Council Report: Fain Webb and Patty Watts reported on the activities of Diocesan Council since our last District 2 meeting: i. New members of the Council were introduced. ii. Committee assignments: 1. Fain in on the Congregational Vitality Committee. 2. Patty is on the Outreach Committee. c. Senior Ministries Report: Patty Watts discussed the following: i. The Bishop wants the Senior Ministries to define its role. Once defined, Senior Ministries needs to publicize its role using: 1. Newark List 2. Conveners’ meeting 3. Clergy 4. Web site 5. Trifold brochure 6. and other means ii. The clergy card. iii. A Creative Congregations event. iv. Senior Ministries Evensong and David P. Hegg, II, Awards II. Business a. Confirmation: We discussed various options for our district confirmation: i. May 18: Districts 1 & 2 at St. Paul’s, Paterson. ii. May 18: District 1 at Trinity and St. Philip’s Cathedral. iii. April 5: District 2 at Trinity and St. Philip’s Cathedral. iv. May 18: District 2 at St. Paul’s, Paterson. v. April 5: District 1 at Trinity and St. Philip’s Cathedral. vi. Original Plan: District at Trinity and St. Philip’s Cathedral on April 5 and District 2 at Trinity and St. Philip’s Cathedral on May 18. III. Youth Ministries Presentation (Kai Alston) a. Diocesan Youth Ministry is a resource for starting and/or jazzing up a parish youth ministry and for helping the youth minister. b. Kai serves as the minister to the youth ministers, who are anyone who works with youth, lay or clergy. c. Kai serves as a minister to young people to help them develop leadership skills. d. Kai coordinates participation in international, national and local youth events. e. Kai is our diocesan Safe Church Initiative coordinator. f. Youth events: i. Middle School retreats ii. Confirmation preparation retreats. g. Initiatives: i. Peer Ministry Initiative: Contact: Jayne Morris, COTS. ii. Safe Church Initiative: “Safeguarding God’s Children” video and program; background checks pilot program. IV. Open Forum a. David DeSmith’s Memo: David proposes that we seek to find ways to make us more viable as a group. It was decided that this will be our main focus at the next meeting. b. Bea’s Kitchen: Bea’s Kitchen, a ministry of Good Shepherd, Wantage, feeds 30-50 people each weekend. This ministry is open to groups from individual congregations or from the district as a whole. V.
