At General Convention: addressing gun violence; supporting marriage equality; appreciating the energy our youth bring

Presiding Bishop-elect Michael Curry and Bishop Mark Beckwith

Early Sunday morning in Salt Lake City, the Episcopal Church joined God in the neighborhood. We claimed common ground against gun violence. We also identified the unholy trinity of poverty, racism and gun violence. And then 1200 of us marched to a nearby park.

The visual of so many people, led by bishops in their bright red vestments, made a profound witness to the church and to the city. and it deepened our commitment to pledge our faith in the Holy Trinity of God, Jesus and Holy Spirit - and to bring that faith into advocacy, education and public witness.

Yesterday, the House of Bishops approved liturgies for trial use that would treat all couples equally in marriage. As marriage equality is now the law of the land, it is also becoming normative practice in the church. The votes for marriage equality by bishops were as definitive as the votes to elect Michael Curry as Presiding Bishop.

Our eleven young people from the diocese arrived on Sunday afternoon. Their presence has inspired and energized those of us who have been here for a week. Their commitment, faith and passion make a wonderful difference in the church.
