The Gertrude Butts Memorial Home Association is a nonprofit corporation organized in March 1929 and very closely affiliated with the Diocese of Newark. It was established to carry out provisions of the will of George Wellington Butts, in memory of his daughter Gertrude who died on February 25, 1904, in her fourteenth year. Mr. Butts was a member of St. Paul's Church, Hoboken. The Certificate of Incorporation of the Association contains this statement of purposes:

"The purposes for which this corporation is formed are to receive, hold,
manage, invest and reinvest monies, securities and all real and personal
property received by gift, bequest or devise, to purchase or otherwise own,
acquire, hold and sell real and personal property and to use the income of
the corporation to carry on, contribute to and advance the work of supporting,
educating and maintaining children in the Diocese of Newark with special
emphasis upon orphan, half orphan and destitute children. In addition to
the use of income for such purposes, portions of the capital of the corporation
may from time to time, in the discretion of the Board of Trustees, be used for
said purposes."

This Corporation meets annually to consider applications. A maximum of $2,000 has been set per person per request. Lower amounts can be decided by the Board.

Scholarships for schooling is understood to be for higher education to the bachelors' degree level as opposed to grammar or secondary schooling. It is the intention of the Board to provide help in other ways than providing scholarships. Such situations can be, for instance, help for young people through the Diocesan Youth Program, Beisler/Eagle's Nest Camp and aid to children of Urban Clergy. The intention of the Board is to provide scholarship for not longer than a four-year period of education. The principles and guidelines require the applicant to write a letter as to why a grant is needed, indicate involvement in the life of his or her congregation, obtain a letter of support from their rector/vicar, indicate their history of employment: after school, weekend and/or summer, and a copy of their latest grades to be submitted for consideration in April.

The Board of Trustees consists of a President, Honorary President, Vice President, Executive Secretary and Treasurer plus appointed members from various parishes within the Diocese of Newark.

For an application form and guidelines, call 973-430-9983. Submission deadline is April 30.
