We are delighted to introduce the second annual report of the Community Development Corporations (CDCs) that are
part of the Episcopal Church in Diocese of Newark. We are especially happy with the inclusion of two new CDCs.
This represents continued expansion of the Episcopal Church¹s effort to help the less fortunate members of
our society. We believe this is one of the most basic and important ways that we do God¹s work.
Throughout the report, you will read about the work of each CDC. As 1998 came to an end, we were especially pleased
that six of our CDC¹s received funding from Governor Whitman's Faith Based Initiative. Total funding exceeded
$300,000 and is tangible recognition of the role these organizations play in our state. We look forward to the
continued expansion of their efforts.
Another important event in 1998 was the Episcopal Church's participation in the statewide observation of Affordable
Housing Month in October. We were glad to declare Sunday, October 25, as a housing Sabbath in our diocese. As part
of this observation, it was also our pleasure to take part in dedications and groundbreakings of new housing developments
in Paterson, Jersey City and Newark. We look forward to taking part in similar events in the future.
Finally, we want to thank all of those who make this work possible, especially our dedicated professional staff,
the CDC boards, volunteers and those who have provided badly needed financial support. Their efforts, as part of
the work of the Episcopal Church, are deeply appreciated. We will continue to do all we can to support this ministry
and hope all who read this report will feel called to join us.
