Full coverage and photos: Claiming Common Ground Against Gun Violence

Early in the morning of Sunday, June 28, 2015, more than 60 Episcopal bishops led a prayerful procession of approximately 1200 General Convention attendees and local Utahns through downtown Salt Lake City in a witness against gun violence.

Starting at the Salt Palace Convention Center where the 78th General Convention was taking place, participants walked one mile to Pioneer Park and back again, singing and accompanied by a drummer.

At each end of the procession, they heard from several speakers. In addition to Bishop Mark Beckwith, a co-convener of Bishops United Against Gun Violence, they included:

  • Bishop Scott Hayashi of the Diocese of Utah, who as a 19-year-old store clerk survived being shot during a robbery.
  • Carolyn Tuft, who was seriously injured in the 2007 Trolley Square shooting in Salt Lake City, in which her 15-year-old daughter was one of five killed.
  • The Rev. Gayle Fischer-Stewart, who before her ordination served for 23 years as a police officer in Washington, D.C..
  • Bishop Michael Curry of the Diocese of North Carolina, Presiding Bishop-elect.

The event received extensive media coverage, linked below. The gallery following contains 47 photos by Nina Nicholson and Cynthia Black.
