This summer Holy Trinity Church in West Orange held its second “God and Science” program for young members of the congregation and the community. More than 22 young people ages 10 to 18 attended the program, held on Saturdays from July 11 through August 8.

Using the Radio Shack electronic kits, participants were introduced to the basic elements of mathematics, science and electronics. They were all enthusiastic to discover the intricacies of how everyday things around them function. Building on the success last year, the program had to acquire more kits to accommodate the increased number of students, including the more advanced kits for those who had progressed to the advanced stage.

The program did not just aim to teach the young people electronics, but also to show them how science could unlock the mystery of creation; how it helps us to explore and understand the world around us. Each session started with prayer and the reading of different parts of the creation story, establishing the connection between that story and science.

The Rev. Miguel Hernandez, a telecommunications engineer by profession, led the program. Christine Jackson, a systems engineer at Motorola, was a guest speaker.

As word of the program spread, members of St. Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Newark visited with a view of introducing a similar program for its youth.
