As our Cathedral explores new opportunities in Newark, your prayer support is requested

The neighborhood immediately surrounding Trinity & St. Phillip’s Cathedral in Newark is the focus of some very exciting development, with the goal of transforming downtown Newark from a 9-5 work place to a vibrant 24/7 community. Our Cathedral is asking for your prayer support as they explore what God is up to and what new opportunities await.

Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral is located at the north end of Military Park, which reopened last June after a renovation led by Daniel Biederman, the urban development guru responsible for the renovation of New York City’s Bryant Park in 1992. Directly across Broad Street from the Cathedral, Prudential is in the process of building two office towers; the ground floors will be commercial space, including a Whole Foods. Also under development next to the Cathedral’s offices at 24 Rector Street is One Riverview, the first market rate residential high-rise to be newly built in the city since 1962 – a collaboration of Shaquille O'Neal, Newark native and basketball star, and Boraie Development. In the planning stages are new Rutgers graduate student dorms, also across Broad Street from the Cathedral , and a Wyndham Hotel in the space occupied by the old Carlton Hotel between the Cathedral and Episcopal House.

“This is an opportunity for the diocese and the Cathedral to live into this new reality God is bringing about in Newark,” said Canon Greg Jacobs.

Congregations are invited to pray along with our Cathedral:

Almighty God, be present with us as we seek renewal of your Cathedral. Helps us to look for your honor and glory, guide us to make choices in your name, grant us courage and strength to find what is needed, and the grace to accept and accomplish our goals. All this we ask in your name. Amen.
