Celebrate the Journey On November 14-24, 1997 the 1997 Fourth Day Weekend, Celebrate the Journey, was held at Sacred Heart Center in Newton, NJ. Fifty people comprised of members of the NewArk Cursillo Community as well as guests from outside of our community were lead in song and prayer by a team of six from the Community of Celebration, also known as the Fisher Folk.
The weekend included two small group skits on Noah and Moses on Friday night, music sessions including tambourine instruction on Saturday, and a film festival on Saturday evening. The weekend concluded with a half-day retreat on Sunday lead by Rosalind Brown, an Episcopal Deacon, from the Community of Celebration. Rosalind's program was centered on the Book of Ruth.
The Daily Offices of prayer were conducted by community members during the weekend. Wonderful meals were provided by the Sacred Heart kitchen staff. Much community, spirituality, love and just plain fun was experienced by all.
Many thanks to Louise Clarke, Susan and Kurt Gruenberg, and Carol and Carl Haefele who staffed the committee that brought this weekend to our community. It was a great success.
First Annual Meeting On Saturday, February 21, 1998, the NewArk Cursillo Community will holds its first Annual Meeting at St. Clement's Church in Hawthorne. Plan now to attend this very special community time together. Again, this is your opportunity to influence the path and direction of Cursilllo in the Diocese of Newark.
Servant Community Meeting The next Servant Community meeting will be held on February 11, 1998 at 7:30 P.M., Christ Church, Pompton, Lakes. The Servant Community meetings are open to and should be attended by all active members who seek to serve the community at large by supporting the ongoing life and function of our NewArk Cursillo community.
The agenda for the February meeting will include:
- NewArk #24 Weekend
- Day of Deeper Understanding
- Annual meeting/election - 2/21/98
- Quarterly rotating Ultreyas
- Fourth Day Weekend, 1998
All Servant community meetings begin at 7:30 P.M. with 15 minutes of group reunion, followed by 15 minutes of study conducted by The Rev. Elizabeth Eddy. From 8:00 P.M. to 9:15 P.M. will be task time. The meeting will end with prayer at 9:30 P.M.
For more information, please call any Secretariat member.
Rotating Ultreyas As you may already know, the Ultreya in Morristown has been canceled due to sparse attendance. As a result of declining attendance at our community's Ultreyas, the Servant Community has proposed a "Rotating Ultreya" schedule. This schedule is being implemented by the Secretariat.
The objectives of the "Rotating Ultreyas" is to provide at least one Ultreya per month in the Diocese, to make Ultreya's more accessible to all community members, and to create less of a burden on the community members who volunteer to co-ordinate the Ultreya.
The Secretariat believes that this "Rotating Ultreya" schedule may be the best way, at this time, of supporting Ultreya, which is viewed as one of the most important aspects of life in the Fourth Day. The "Rotating Ultreya" schedule will begin on Tuesday, February 24, 1998 at St. Clement's, Hawthorne. Besides St. Clement's, the Servant community has selected the three other locations:
- St. Mary's, Sparta
- St. John's, Dover
- St. Andrew's & Holy Communion, South Orange
In 1998 the Ultreyas will be held as follows:
- St. Clement's in February, June, October
- St. Mary's in March, July and November
- St. John's in April, August, and December
- St. Andrew's in May and September
The Ultra co-ordinator at St. Clement's will continue to be Anne Meier. The Sparta, Dover, and South Orange Ultreyas have not yet announced a date, time or co-ordinator. Additional information will follow.
Group Reunions
- The Cursillo Community at Christ Church, Pompton Lakes, has announced that, as of the fourth Thursday in January and every fourth Thursday of the month thereafter, it will run a "Supper Reunion Group". The group will gather at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall to share a pot-luck supper followed by group reunion. Put this on your calendar and attend whenever you can. It is hoped that this will enable us to have a reunion group around our crazy schedules and not place a great burden on any one person.
Please remember that a reunion group is an opportunity for Cursillistas to share with each other what they are doing in their Christian journeys. In group we share what we are doing to strengthen our relationships with God through the Cursillo method of Piety, Study and Action.
For more information concerning the Christ Church group contact any Cursillista in that Parish. For more information about starting a group of your own, please call The Rev. Elizabeth Eddy or Louise Clarke.
- St. Andrew's and Holy Communion in South Orange holds a weekly group reunion on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:00 p.m. For more information call The Rev. Jonathan Percival at 973-7633754.
