A Dream of
One World En Español
In his book, "A Year of the Lord," Herbert O'Driscoll
wrote a piece about Epiphany titled, "A Dream of One
World." I give you two brief quotes from this piece,
followed by a personal reflection.
"When the child was born to Mary, a strange thing happened.
Visitors, unknown, exotic, unexpected, came and knelt with
gifts. Their coming seemed to be a hint, even a warning. It
seemed to warn that, while this birth seemed merely a rustic,
local event, it was more. While it seemed to be within Judaism,
it was somehow also beyond it. The stable and the village
were greater than they seemed, they were capable of being
inclusive of much more."
"Long ago? Yes. Why tell it? Because it is about us.
In what way? Consider. Human history could be written around
the theme of moments when our human vision of the way God
acts in history has suddenly had to broaden and grow. We are
at such a moment. At countless levels we wrestle with the
painful demands on our capacity to include rather than exclude."-Herbert
O'Driscoll
The mission of the church today might be described as the
task of enlarging and renovating the stable in order to accommodate
the amazingly inclusive diversity of God's creation, all of
whom are invited to a place at the (s)table. . .in the midst
of a Global village.
Indeed, how painful it is for us to be tested concerning
our capacity to include. To allow, yes, even to invite and
welcome others different from us to gather at the stable is
to discover that gifts will be given which have never been
given before, gifts that are different from ours, gifts that
may even challenge us to discover something new or different
about the giver of the gift as well as the one receiving the
gift.
When we are able to look around this diocese with eyes wide
open, we see a rainbow of God's gifts to us in the faces and
languages and traditions and dreams of those with whom we
live. I choose for us to embrace these gifts with Thanksgiving
for the incredible opportunity to be here in this multi-ethnic,
multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-abled and disabled community
with multiple expressions of gender, sexuality and age.
This whole matter of welcoming all of God's diversity to
the (s)table is not a passing fancy, but worthy of much more
than rhetorical resolution at a church convention. It is a
commitment to amendment of life.
Our Diocesan Convention on Jan. 24 and 25, 2003, will be
a time of Celebration and Engagement as we explore more deeply
our real life as a diocese in this multi-ethnic world.
On Feb. 9, we will gather at the Cathedral for a Eucharist
at 3 p.m. in celebration of blessed Absalom Jones. What a
joy it would be to see a Cathedral filled with our diocesan
family. Bishop Brome will be the preacher for this occasion.
On Feb. 18, the diocesan gathering will be at Church of the
Redeemer in Morristown, to share in an Oasis-sponsored Eucharist
in Celebration of Committed Relationships. I will be the celebrant
and preacher, standing with those who seek to claim the blessing
. . . and in some sense with those who have in fact already
claimed the blessing. Come, join the celebration - there is
always room at the (s)table.
On March 29, Kitty Kawecki and her Celebrating Creative Congregations
team will offer a Mini-Event on "Connections" -
"The Spirit Within Us." In this focused day on Spirituality,
we will be ably led by the president of the Union of Black
Episcopalians, the Rev. Dr. Sandye Wilson, and the Rev. Robert
Corin Morris, director of Interweave Center for Wholistic
Living. Then on Oct. 19, 20, 21, the Rev. Eric Law, author
and dynamic speaker, will work with the clergy of the diocese
at the Fall Clergy Conference to further explore the challenges
of living creatively in a multi-ethnic society.
Yes - we are serious about this mission as the People of
God called to be faithful witnesses who respect the dignity
of every human being. Oh, yes, you might want to remember,
that after those first wise people found their way to the
(s)table and the Christ Child, they were warned in a dream
to go home a different way. Coming to the (s)table and encountering
the Christ Child will inevitably change your life, and compel
you to go home another way.

Un sueño
de un mundo
.En su libro, "un año del Señor,"
Herbert O"Driscoll escribió una pedazo acerca
de la Epifanía titulado," Un sueño de un
mundo." Citaré dos dichos de ese trozo, seguido
por una reflección personal.
"Cuando el niño había nacido de María,
algo extraño pasó. Visitantes, desconocidos,
exóticos no esperados, llegaron y se arrodillaron con
sus regalos. Su venida llegó a ser una alusión,
talvez una advertencia. Pareció advertir que, aunque
este nacimiento parecía simplemente un evento rústico,
local, fue mucho más. Aunque parecía ocurrir
dentro del Judaismo, fue de alguna manera algo que iba más
allá. El establo y el pueblecito eran más grandes
de lo que parecían, eran capaces de ser mucho más
inclusivos
"Hace mucho tiempo? Si, Por qué contarlo? Porque
se trata de nosotros. De qué manera? Consideren. La
historia humana podría escribirse en cuanto al tema
de los momentos en los que nuestra visión humana de
cómo actúa Dios en la historia, de repente,
ha tenido que abarcar mucho más y crecer. Estamos en
ese momento. A niveles incontables luchamos con las demandas
dolorosas de nuestra capacidad de incluir en lugar de excluir.

La misión de la iglesia de hoy podría ser descrita
como la tarea de agrandar y renovar el establo para poder
acomodar a la diversidad maravillosa e inclusiva de la creación
de Dios, a todos los que son invitados a un lugar del establo.

De veras, cuán penoso es para nosotros que se nos ponga
a prueba en cuanto a la capacidad de incluir. Para dejar,
si, encluso para invitar o dar la bienvenida, a otros diferentes
a nosotros, y juntarnos en el establo, es descubrir que se
darán los dones que nunca fueron dados antes, dones
que son distintos a los nuestros, dones que podrían
ser retos para nosotros y así descubrir algo nuevo
y deferente en cuanto al que da el regalo tanto como al que
lo recibe.
Cuando podamos mirar por toda la diócesis con los
ojos muy abiertos, veremos un arco-iris de los dones de Dios
que nos da en los rostros y los languages y tradiciones y
sueños de aquellos con los que vivimos. He escogido
para nosotros abrazar esos dones con Agracedimiento por la
incredible oportunidad de estar aqui en esa comunidad multi-étnica,
multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-capaz, multi- incapacitada
y con expresiones multiples de género, sexualidad y
edad.
Todo el hecho de dar la bienvenida a toda la diversidad de
Dios en el establo (table-mesa) no es una fantasía
pasajera, su valor es mucho más que una solución
retórica en la convención de la iglesia
Nuestra Covención Diocesana del 24 y 25 de enero de
2003 será una época de Celebración y
Compromiso cuando exploremos con más profundidad nuestra
vida verdadera como una diócesis en este mundo multi-etnico.
El 9 de febrero nos juntaremos en la Catedral para la Eucaristía
a las 3 p.m. para la celebración del bendito Absalom
Jones. Cuán jubiloso será ver la Catedral llena
con nuestra familia diocesana. El Obispo Brome será
el homilista para esta ocasión.
El 18 de febrero, la diócesis se juntará en
la iglesia del Redentor en Morristown, para compartir un Oasis-auspiciada
Eucaristía para celebrar las Relaciones Cometidas.
Seré el celebrante y predicador, junto a los que buscan
afirmar la bendición…y de alguna manera con aquellos
que ya que la afirmaron. Vengan, únanse a esa celebración
- hay siempre espacio en el establo.

En este día se enfocará la Espiritualidad. Estaremos
dirigidos por el presidente de la Unión de Episcopales
Negros, el Rev. Dr. Sandye Wilson, y el Rev. Robert Corin
Morri, director de "Interveave Center for Wholistic Living"
(Centro de vida talalista) Luego el 19, 20, 21de Octubre,
Eric Law, autor y conferenciante dinámico, trabajará
con el clero de la diócesis para la conferencia del
Clero del Otoño, para explorar más profundamente
el reto de vivir en forma creative en una socieda multi-étnica.
Sí - Tomamos muy en serio esta misión como
Pueblo de Dios llamados a ser fieles testigos que respetan
la dignidad de cada ser humano. Oh, sí, querran recordar,
que después de que esa primera gente sabía que
encontraron el camino al establo y al Niño Cristo,
se les advirtió en un sueño de ir a casa por
un camino distinto. Llegando al establo y encuentrando al
Niño Cristo inevitablemente les cambiará a ustedes
la vida y les obligará a volver a casa por un camino
distinto.
