"While We Have Time..."

Near the end of Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he writes, “Do not
be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow…So
let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at
harvest-time, if we do not give up. So then, while we have time, let us
do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
Having announced my intention to call for the election of the
tenth bishop of Newark, I am aware that this now becomes a transitional
time in the life of this diocese. It is a time for us to take stock
of our strengths, weaknesses, challenges and vision for the writing
of the next chapter of this complex diocese. Each person in the
diocese should have access and opportunity to describe and share
their piece of the truth about the diocese and the kind of leadership,
which will be needed to properly serve the needs of the diocese and
the larger church as we face the challenges that are before us.
I want to reaffirm some of the core values that have been important
to me, and that I believe are central to the life of this diocese.
They are:
† the continuing development of our relational life together, as
a people in covenant with our God and with each other;
† a deepening understanding of a mutual ministry called
forth from our Baptism that sees episcopal, priestly,
diaconal and lay ministries as equal in value and different
in function;
† the simple grace of learning and practicing speaking the
truth in love to each other;
† recognizing and respecting the voices and actions of leadership
at the grassroots level;
† continuing to find the best articulation of urban strategy
and ministry, and pursuing it;
† strengthening our commitment to discernment and lifelong
formation for each of our ministries;
† and, focusing much energy on the development of congregational
life and the equipping and raising up of competent
leaders for the work of the church.
During these next months, all of us will have an opportunity to participate
in the process of electing the next bishop of Newark. But in
truth, much of the process will engage a small number of people for
extended periods of time. That is to say, we have work to do, and I invite you to continue that work with me. “While we have time, let
us do good to all, especially to those of the household of faith”…
Well Paul, with all due respect, “While we have time, let the household of
faith also do good to those who are not of the household of faith.”

“Mientras tenemos Tiempo…”

Casi al final de su carta a los Gálatas, San Pablo escribe, “No se
engañen ustedes: nadie puede burlarse de Dios. Lo que se siembra, se
cosecha… Así que no debemos cansarnos de hacer el bien, porque si
no nos desanimamos, a su debido tiempo cosecharemos. Por eso mientras tenemos tiempo, hagamos bien a todos, especialmente a
quienes son parte de la familia de la fe.”
Habiendo anunciado mi intención de solicitar la elección del
décimo obispo de Newark, estoy conciente de que el momento actual
se convierte en un período de transición para la vida de esta diócesis.
Es tiempo para que hagamos un inventario de nuestras cualidades,
debilidades, desafíos, y visión necesarios para escribir el próximo
capítulo de esta compleja diócesis. Cada persona en la diócesis
debería tener la oportunidad de describir y compartir su parte de la
verdad sobre la diócesis y la clase de liderazgo que se va a necesitar
para responder apropiadamente a las necesidades de la diócesis y de
la iglesia en general en tanto que enfrentamos los desafíos que se
nos avecinan.
Deseo reafirmar algunos de los valores fundamentales que han
sido importantes para mí, y que creo son centrales para la vida de
esta diócesis. Ellos son:
† el desarrollo continuo de nuestra vida en relación de unos
con otros, como pueblo bajo un pacto con Dios y con los
unos con los otros;
† el entendimiento profundo de un ministerio mutuo
convocado desde nuestro Bautismo, el cual ve a los
ministerios del obispado, sacerdocio, diaconado, y laicado
como iguales en valor y diferentes en función;
† la gracia simple de aprender y practicar el decirnos la
verdad con amor los unos a los otros;
† reconociendo y respetando las voces y acciones de
liderazgo al nivel de base;
† continuando la búsqueda de la mejor expresión de
estrategia y ministerio urbano, y llevarla a cabo;
† fortaleciendo nuestra dedicación al discernimiento y
adiestramiento de por vida para cada uno de nuestros
ministerios;
† y, enfocando mucha de nuestra energía al desarrollo de
vida de las congregaciones y la preparación y selección de
líderes competentes para la labor de la iglesia.
Durante los próximos meses, todos nosotros vamos a tener la
oportunidad de participar en el proceso de elección del próximo
obispo de Newark. Pero en verdad, gran parte del proceso va a ocupar
a un número pequeño de personas durante largos períodos de
tiempo. Eso para decir que, tenemos mucho por hacer, y les invito a
continuar esa labor conmigo. “Mientras tenemos tiempo, hagamos
bien a todos, especialmente a quienes son parte de la familia de la fe.”…
Bien, Pablo, con todo respeto, “mientras tenemos tiempo,
permite que los miembros de la familia de la fe también le hagan el
bien a quienes no pertenecen a la familia de fe.”
