Organist and Director of Music -
Church of the Holy Innocents, 681 Prospect Avenue, West Orange, NJ 07052 is seeking a Part-time Director of Music to work collegially in ministry with the Priest –in-Charge to engage, inspire, and enliven the congregation through liturgy and music. About Church of the Holy Innocents
The parish is small with an average attendance of 30 in 2009, gathering in a beautiful Carpenter Gothic church building in a comfortable suburban area. The congregation is largely composed of professionals, many of whom work in the New York City area. Most parish activity takes place on Sunday, making the liturgy a central focus of our congregational life.
Past and Current Music Program
There is a tradition and appreciation of fine classical organ music. Traditional Anglican choral music is considered the norm, but variety of musical style and instrumentation is also appreciated.
Currently, we are operating with two supply organists who provide music for the Sunday and a brief choir rehearsal before the service. The choir consists of 3-4 female voices with an occasional addition of a male voice. Until the former Music Director departed a year ago, a bell choir of about 12 persons rehearsed weekly on Sunday afternoons, playing in worship about 10 times a year. The bell choir also had an outreach to nursing homes and offered a well-received annual concert. Several years ago, trumpets and drums were a thrilling part of the Easter service.
Hopes for Future Music Program
While quite satisfied with the organ and instrumental music provided by the supply organists, the congregation now desires to resume a fuller music program. The choir looks forward to continuity of one director and the rebuilding of that group. Occasional inclusion of the children of the parish and enlivening of congregational singing will be key goals. We would like to see the bells incorporated into the music as feasible, perhaps to accompany the choir occasionally.
Musical Instruments
Moller Pipe Organ 3-4 ranks, built 1959
Malmark Hand bells – Three Octave set with tables, pads, drapes, etc. purchased in 2003 and dedicated to various loved ones of our parish family
Choir chimes – 25 Note Set G4-G6
Upright piano in the nave
Yamaha Electric keyboard
Tambourine
Facilities
The choir rehearses in the church. A desk could be located in the Undercroft for the music director if desired.
Music Library
A variety of music for choir anthems including a library received from another church is in need of organization. The church subscribes to an online music license to add to the repertoire. There is also a library of Hand bell Music.
Job Description
The Director of Music will be the principal musician, organist, choir director and music educator for the parish, building participation in the choir and the congregation. He or she will report to the Priest-in-Charge, working collegially with the priest and Parish Administrator as a team minister to proclaim the Good News of Christ and the joy of the Christian faith in all that we do. The preferred candidate should have knowledge of traditional Anglican music, be an accomplished organist, and be creative and flexible with new music styles and instrumentation.
Responsibilities include:

• Oversee the maintenance of the music library and instruments.
• Accompany children of the church school to sing in church occasionally.

• Provide personally or by substitute, music for weddings and funerals several times a year. An agreed upon honorarium will be paid for these services.
Time Requirements and Compensation

It is expected that comp-time will be given for extra time needed during Holy Week and other especially busy weeks.

Preface and Position Summary
All Saints’ Episcopal Church is an open, welcoming and inclusive congregation in the bustling Bergen County Suburbs of New York City. We are a growing congregation, and are made up of a diversity of peoples and families. We intentionally welcome people and families of all kinds through our doors. Our ministry to children, youth and families is a large piece of our parish identity.
The Associate for Youth and Family Ministries is a part-time position (approximately 15-20 hours a week), with the direct responsibility for continuing to grow, oversee and support the ministries.
We have a growing number of young people (70) registered in the nursery through 12th grade programs of this key ministry. The program includes:
- First Steps: Nursery Program for infants and toddlers is provided year-round in a specifically equipped area of the Fellowship Hall during Sunday Morning services and also during special liturgies or family-related activities. The program is run as a parent cooperative with the assistance of a professional nursery caregiver.
- Kids for Christ 1&2: All Saints’ primary Christian Formation for children ages preschool through 5th grade. Meets on Sundays during the school year (September-June) from 9:30-10:30 in the chapel building, with the children generally joining their parents in the church for Holy Communion. This program uses either “In the Beginning (K4C1)” or “’The Promise land (K4C2)” curricula from Willow Creek Church (though tweaked a bit) presenting the Biblical narrative in a high-energy large group gathering followed by supplementary reinforcement and application of The Word in age-appropriate Small Groups (PreK-K, Grades 1 &2; and Grades 3-5).
- The Rolling Stones: For Middle School (6-8 grades) students on Sunday Mornings during the school year from 9:30-10:30 led by a team of rotating adults (6). The Rite 13 portion of the “Journey to Adulthood” program curriculum is the basis for the lesson plans, inviting the students to deeper theological reflection, Biblical exploration and age-appropriate character development
- The Rocks: For High School (9-12 grades) students two alternating Sunday evenings/month during the school year from 6-7:30 led by a rotating team of adults. The J2A program again is the basis of the lesson plan, and other current curriculum. Additionally, the Rocks prepare for confirmation when such time arises.
