Dinner with NEWARK HOUSE

Last evening I had dinner with the Newark House Interns as part of my regular schedule.  This night was the first night they were preparing the meal and hosting me.

I arrived to find two Erin and Jania busy in the kitchen and fragrances of a medley of wonderful foods prepared for the night's dinner.  We gathered in dinning room and I was asked to sit at the head of the table which has been custom in the past two years.  Kam lead in prayer and we then began to share the bounty before us.

There were several bowls filled with curried chicken and a vegetarian curry sauce - plenty of rice and bread, fresh tangerines and cool clear water.  If that was not enough Jania made fresh peach cobbler for all to share. This group is off to a great start in hospitality and gastronomy.

The dinner conversation was filled with a recap of everyone's day and the adventures each intern has experienced since arriving in Newark three weeks ago.  One of the wonderful gifts of this program is to work with people who see and share abundance and do not live in scarcity.  I give thanks for the commitment to service, love and humor the interns bring to our diocese and our ministry partners.  I am grateful for their culinary talents and resourcefulness.

Tomorrow evening I will dine with the interns in the Union City House and I do know corn bread has been a specialty of the house.  I will keep you all posted, and would like to suggest perhaps your congregation would like to share a meal with our interns -- send them an invitation.

Erik
