St. Peter's MorristownPresent: Jan, Ken, Dave, Richard Haines (welcome!)
Next meeting: Wednesday, April 7, CC Pompton, 7:30 PM
1. Convention went well. Balloting for next year - we could really improve the process if we displayed the results. Also there is an issue about what to do about balloting software. It is owned by Larry. The diocese has asked us to get a bid to purchase and run the software next year and provide 2 people to be trained and run the program/process. That would give us 18 months to find other software and review it. Is there anyone who can think of trying to work with this? Dave will contact Michael and then Larry and see what needs to be one.
2. nj.com: Steve sent out the note at Dale's request - the though was that all churches could have a web presence. It is an input page, with advertising. No one really wants to do all the data entry necessary (on-line). In theory, someone on staff could be assigned to do it, since no knowledge of web authoring is actually necessary.
3. No one has heard anything from the person to whom Dale sent our names, so there doesn't seem to be any immediate action necessary.
4. Newark: Steve met with diocesan staff as a preliminary to the brainstorming about what is going to happen for the next 5 years. There is a planning session planned for next Wednesday. It will be a small group - Steve has already gone to talk with the staff about what could be done. Steve has asked Jack C. to develop the plan - technology should not lead the plan. A question came about how many are on the newark e-mail list. There are 50, to date, and the subscribe form is now on the Technology web page. John will also add it to the main diocesan site, probably under resources. The staff needs to make an e-mail distribution list for their own purposes if they want things to go out just to clergy.
For the "hearings" to allow congregations to have input into the tech plan, we'll try to arrange two: Christ Church, Pompton on Monday May 10, 7:30 and
East Orange May 15th or 22nd
If they are confirmed soon, Jan will contact Dale about getting a notice into the Voice.
5. Steve got a note from Martha Lewis - she's looking for us to do a beginning workshop and to support MAC. We were looking for a java class with Cindy on an advanced workshop.
Plans for the workshops:
Give up the April 10 date - we never did anything with it.
Lets do a beginner's workshop in August and an advanced workshop in September.
Sept 25 - Advanced, August 21- Beginner
6. Y2K Steve asked about inventory. Steve told them to set the date of the old computer that's not compliant and used for storage back to 1980 and use it with the wrong date. The network is old and needs to go to a new net. Chris cannot do a switch. Ask the company they've been using and get them to come in and put in a new system and do a migration. We're talking about $12k to purchase the stuff. Dick is concerned about accountability. We're outside the formal structure and telling them... This screams for a 1 month short term consultant, not a volunteer. They have to get someone. Ken can review the bid and make sure its a good bid. Chris said someone needs to come in and start them from scratch. Does Chris know someone who can do this? The machines are ok but the infrastructure and the discipline to use the lan properly need to be addressed. We really need to find a person to hire to do this. Dave is going to ask someone he knows to see if he can get a recommendation
7. Dioceseofnewark.org It's time to go out and get our own website....Steve has pulled down Digital Nation's page. 25 meg of storage and e-mail for $75 set up and $60/month.
DioceseofNewark.org is available and Steve is actively pursuing getting it done. John will still be the control - webmanager, limited access for FTP.
8. We were talking about best practices -
like Dave's pledge Access application, we've mentioned other things. Dick is reviewing software. We could put this kind of thing up as shareware. Dick will give us software reviews and will look at Dave's application.
